This site argues that a public institution should be accountable to the community it is building in. That argument only works if we hold ourselves to a higher standard than the one we are asking of others. This page sets out that standard.
It applies to comments, contact form messages, and anything else you send us.
What we want
- Corrections. If we have a fact wrong, tell us. We will fix it and note the correction publicly. This is the most valuable thing you can send us.
- Documents. Public records, meeting minutes, permit filings, correspondence — including material that cuts against our position.
- Disagreement. If you support this project, say so here. A page full of people who already agree with us persuades nobody.
- Local knowledge. What you have seen, what you were told, what happened at a meeting you attended.
What we will not publish
Anything targeting individuals
This is our firmest rule, and we will enforce it against people who agree with us as readily as against people who do not.
The people working on this project — University staff, laboratory researchers, engineers, contractors, and the trades who would build it — are doing their jobs. Our disagreement is with an institution and a decision, not with the individuals carrying it out. Township officials, Regents, and legislators are public figures whose official conduct is fair game; their families, homes, and private lives are not.
We will remove, without discussion:
- Home addresses, personal phone numbers, personal email addresses, or family details of anyone.
- Threats of any kind, or anything that reads as an invitation to confront someone in person.
- Harassment, abuse, or pile-ons directed at a named individual.
- Claims about a person’s motives, honesty, or character presented as fact.
Credible threats will be reported to law enforcement.
Unsupported factual claims
Stating an opinion is welcome. Asserting a fact without a source is not, and we will remove or hold specific factual allegations that have nothing behind them — particularly allegations of illegality, corruption, or bad faith.
This is not squeamishness. A single fabricated claim in a comment thread gives everyone who wants to dismiss this community a reason to. Say “I think this is a bad deal for the township” freely. Say “they took a bribe” only with evidence.
Discrimination and hostility
No slurs or attacks based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or age. This is a community with neighbors in it.
Off-topic and commercial content
No spam, advertising, link schemes, or unrelated political campaigning. This site is about one project and the policy questions around it.
Unlawful material
Nothing illegal, nothing that infringes copyright, and no confidential or classified material. If you hold documents you are not authorized to share, do not send them to us — see the note on sensitive information in our privacy policy.
How moderation works
Comments are reviewed before they appear. We are volunteers, so approval is not instant, and slowness is not censorship.
We may approve, decline, or remove any comment. Where a comment is mostly fine but contains something that has to go, we may remove the offending portion and mark the edit rather than discard the whole thing. We will not silently alter the substance of what you wrote.
We will not decline a comment because it disagrees with us. If we ever do, we deserve to be called out for it.
Comments are the views of the people who write them, not of this site. Publishing a comment is not an endorsement of it.
Corrections
If you believe something on this site is factually wrong, write to [email protected] and tell us what is wrong and, if you can, what the correct information is.
We will look at it, and if we are wrong we will correct the page and note the correction rather than quietly editing it. That commitment applies to anyone who writes to us, including the University of Michigan, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and anyone working on the project.
A note to people who work on this project
You are welcome here. If you think we have described something inaccurately, tell us and we will fix it. If you want to make the case for the project in your own words, we will publish it.
If you are considering sharing something you are not authorized to share, please read the sensitive information section of our privacy policy first. We cannot protect you, and we would rather you protected yourself.
Using our material
We want this material reused. That is the point of publishing it.
Original writing and analysis on this site is published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence. You may copy, quote, adapt, and republish it, including commercially, as long as you credit this site and link back where practical. You do not need to ask permission. Township officials, reporters, researchers, and residents of other communities facing similar projects are especially welcome to take what is useful.
Two limits apply, because they are not ours to give away. Quoted material from other sources — the University’s own statements, government records, news reporting, research reports — belongs to whoever produced it, and our licence does not extend to it. The same goes for any photograph or graphic credited to someone else. Please go to the original source.

What you write stays yours. By posting a comment you give us permission to display it on this site, keep it as part of the published record of this discussion, and quote it in our own material about the project. You can ask us to remove your comment or your name at any time and we will.
Do not post material you do not have the right to post.

We work hard to get things right, we cite our sources, and we correct errors when they are pointed out. We still cannot promise this site is complete, current, or free of mistakes. Projects change, bill numbers change, documents get revised, and we are volunteers.

Our analysis of statutes, regulations, and constitutional questions is the work of residents reading public documents, not of lawyers, and it should not be relied on as a legal opinion. If you are making a decision that matters — testifying, filing a comment, taking a legal position — verify it against the primary sources we link to and, where it counts, talk to a professional.
This site is provided as-is. To the fullest extent the law allows, we accept no liability for any loss arising from reliance on it. If that sounds like boilerplate, read it instead as what it is: an instruction to check our work, which is the same thing we are asking of the University.

We link extensively to government records, university pages, research, and news coverage. We do not control those sites, we are not responsible for their content or availability, and linking to a source is not an endorsement of everything on it. Documents move and pages get edited, so we note retrieval dates where it matters.
The site itself
We may add, change, or remove pages, and we may stop running this site altogether. Where we correct a substantive error we will say so on the page rather than edit quietly.

We may update this policy. Changes will be dated at the top of the page.
